Clearly, you are over SnOMG or Snowmageddon or Snoverkill or whatever the hell everyone is calling the enormous white blanket of wet thrown over everyone in the last week.
Sure, you could make another frickin' snow fort (what? no snow fort? pffft!), watch the Dupont snowball fight clip again on CNN, you could even be a responsible citizen and shovel another forty square feet of sidewalk but really, don't you think it's time to leave the house and have some FUN?
You know what I mean.
ROLLER DERBY. DC ARMORY. TOMORROW.
It's time for you to getcher heinie in gear and gather your friends (and kids! and friends' kids!) to come on down to the DC Armory TOMORROW for some whip crackin' hard hittin' ham fisted female aggression...on wheels!
Free face painting for the kiddies! Not free alcohol for the grownups! Awesome derby dames with names like Condoleeza Slice, Guantanamo Babe, and Ovary Action! TWO kickass bouts, Pittsburg vs. DC All Stars *and* local teams Scare Force One vs. Cherry Blossom Bombshells! The most fun you'll ever have at the DC Armory...before our next bout in March!
( fancy dancy graphic, even )
DC ROLLER DERBY February 13 - TOMORROW DC Armory Stadium Armory Metro Doors at 3pm, bout at 4 Adults $12, Kids 6-11 $5, and 5 and under are free!

The sun is shining and the Snowpocalypse of 2010 is but a distant memory. But DAMN it's still colder than a witch's uh...wait, this is a family fun event, uh...colder than a roller derby queen's heart when she goes in to massacre the opposing jammer.
Jammer? What?
No, that is not a nice Amish lady responsible for the tasty treats on your toast in the morning, goober. In roller derby, the jammer is the skater with the star on her helmet, and she scores points for her team by passing opposing players on the track.
So here's the deal:
There's a biggo renaissance of roller derby all over the damn country. Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page made a feature film, leagues are popping up all over like crazy, and you, YOU have a seriously badass (ranked 9th on the East Coast, dig?) league RIGHT HERE at the DC Armory.
Righteous women on wheels? Check. Speeds that'll make you wish you'd sat farther back? Check. Suicide seats? Double Check. Family fun, facepainting for the kiddies *and* beer? Checkity check. Oh yes.
( fancy dancy graphic under the cut, dig? )

Passing along... I've been to several of their events, and I really recommend them!
The Nehirim Queer Shabbaton is a weekend-long “urban retreat” of community, culture, and spirituality for GLBT Jews, partners, & allies. featuring cutting-edge workshops, services, networking, yoga & meditation, delicious kosher food, and plenty of time to connect.
After three successful Shabbatonim in New York, we are now bringing this program to Washington, D.C., in partnership with GLOE, the Kurlander Program for Gay and Lesbian Outreach & Engagement at the Washington DCJCC, and Bet Mishpachah.
Who comes to the Queer Shabbaton? 100+ people of all ages, religious stripes, and sexual & gender identities: secular to orthodox, transgender nice Jewish boys to non-Jewish partners, students to seniors — there are people like you at Nehirim.
When: 5pm on Friday, February 5 through 1pm on Sunday, February 7 Where: DC JCC,16th & Q How much: Sliding scale from $80-140. Financial aid available – no one turned away for lack of funds.

On Saturday, December 19, Design Within Reach of Adams Morgan, D.C.'s coolest furniture showroom, hosts the 4th Annual Holiday Booty Market. Shoppers can experience the modern wonders of Design Within Reach home furnishings, while getting their last minute shopping done from some of their favorite local Crafty Bastards! 'Tis the season to buy handmade and at this event you can find the best of this region's handmade gifts, sold to you directly by the local artists and artisans who make them.
At this annual event, that DCist.com deems the "winter version of Crafty Bastards", you can peruse aisles of craft vendors (indoors!) while enjoying refreshments and music. This year's vendors bring you a wide array of gift options at affordable prices. Featured items include hand-stitched coasters and placemat sets by This Chickadee, homemade soaps made by Biggs and Featherbelle, recycled leather cuffs made from vintage belts by Fisticuffs and plush animals from upcycled sweaters by Tigerflight. You can also find hand-printed items by illustrator Jaime Zollars and all manner of Zombie Plague Holiday items from Tina Seamonster. Denada Design will be showcasing some of her famous scarves and 60bugs will have awesome hand-printed and -embroidered shirts and accessories for the hip little ones on your list. All vendors are Crafty Bastards veterans and thus awesome! The first 100 shoppers will get a fun goody bag and there will be snacks and temporary tattoos provided all day at this free event!

3:32 pm - In TWO short days...Give Thanks for Roller Derby!
|

It's that time of the month again. No, I'm not talking about redoing the chore wheel at your group house or washing the car (every month? holy CRAP you keep a clean vehicle) or even calling up Aunt Marge to tell her you love her (and hope she keeps sending those "birthday" checks every 30 days).
Nope. While of course we're thankful for chores done and clean cars and most def Aunt Marge, I'm talking about GIVING THANKS FOR ROLLER DERBY!
That's right, once again it's time to put on your party shoes and haul butt down to the DC Armory THIS SATURDAY for some rockin' sockin' four wheeled action!
Amazingly athletic skaters! Serious scintillating scoring! Wild and wonderful halftime entertainment! Beer for which I have no alliteration!
So come on down to the DC Armory in TWO SHORT DAYS which means THIS SATURDAY and give thanks for all these fantastic women skating around and knocking the everliving crap out of each other, ok? ( fancy dancy graphic right here )

|

|
Late breaking news...
TONIGHT, for one night only, DC is delighted to receive MANGOS WITH CHILI. Do NOT miss this show!
Founded in 2006 by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and Ms Cherry Galette, Mangos with Chili began as an annual touring cabaret of queer and trans people of color performance artists, with the goal of creating a cultural institution that would build the careers and visibility of QTPOC artists.
For over 3 years, Mangos With Chili has performed to sold out houses across North America, wowing audiences in world class theaters, underground performance spaces, bars, and campus halls, with their high intensity, breathtaking performance, politics, and storytelling craft, reflecting the lives and stories of queer and trans people of color, while making art that speaks out in resistance to the daily struggles around silence, isolation, homophobia, and violence that QTPOC face.
MANGOS WITH CHILI Queer and Trans Artists of Color Cabaret La Casa 3166 Mt. Pleasant St. WDC $8-12

|

|
The National Union of Jewish LGBTQQI Students's 14th annual conference will take place January 15th to the 17th at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. As usual the conference will be held over a weekend, and co-hosted by a campus Hillel, the NUJLS leadership conference features workshops, services, community building, and social time. This year's keynotes are Rabbi Bradley Artsen, Dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies and comedian Dana Goldberg!
We welcome students from all sorts of backgrounds (religious, not, newly out, not, liberal to conservative, and more). Workshops, speakers, and text studies address such topics as Judaism and homosexuality, activism, relationships, ethics, coming out, and politics. Last year more than one hundred students came from across the United States and Canada to participate, and we anticipate a similar turnout this year! Registration ($80) includes meals (all kosher), housing, and all conference events. Travel and registrations subsidies are available upon request (in the registration form). Register at http://www.nujlsonline.org/conferenceinfo.html
Hope to see you there!
